Spaces of Culture

To celebrate, expand and further develop relationships between its pilot cities, Spaces of Culture brings two of Izmir’s projects—a collaborative folk concert and an example of urban transformation through art—to audiences in Diyarbakır and Gaziantep in December.

With the aim to discover and discuss the similarities and differences between oral narratives in Diyarbakır and Izmir, Amîdart’s ‘Oral Culture Studies’ project focused on oral art forms, compilation workshops and improvisational Kurdish music. In collaboration with 6X6X6’s NOKSAN Improvisation Team, dengbêj (folk poet-singer) Mesut Gever and local musicians from both cities perform in close dialogue with rich improvisations ranging from blues to dengbêj klams (folk songs). The musicians travel to Gaziantep in December for their concert, followed by an open discussion, furthering cultural exchange.

Just outside the city center, Darağaç_İzmir artist collective stands out with the close relationship they have established with the local residents and for the urban transformation of this peripheral neighborhood. With its multiple initiatives, including drawing workshops for children and live street art performances, Darağaç_İzmir sets an example of social transformation through art. Audiences in Diyarbakir engage with the site-specific experience of ‘Contemporary Art in the Neighborhood’ through video, artist talks and a review of the exhibition books.
