Showcase

Exhibition, Training

Diyarbakır, İzmir

15/12 – 27/12/2019

As one of three Spaces of Culture showcase events, Syrian artist Rawan Hasan Magharbeh shares ‘A Very Short Story’ with audiences in Diyarbakır and Izmir in December. In her debut animation she uses her illustration style to uniquely visualize the story of a child refugee’s migration from Syria to Turkey. The four-minute hand-drawn animation creatively presents the obstacles the child encounters after his injury during the war, his transition into Turkish society and his hopes and dreams for a better future in a literary-artistic way.

Three-day events in both locations include screenings of the animation followed by Q&A sessions and open discussions with the artist; an exhibition of the drawings, sketches, illustrations and additional artworks that helped shape the film; as well as a full-day animation workshop for 14–17-year-old children. In the workshop, Magharbeh explains her creative process, highlights different types of animations and teaches the participants film-making techniques from story writing and character building to music, lighting and sound effects. The children leave with the tools they need to create their own story and a booklet showing ‘A Very Short Story’ in different stages of the film-making process. The workshop is held in Arabic with simultaneous translation to Turkish.
