The consecutive earthquakes occurred in Turkey at the beginning of the year and directly affected 11 cities with a population of over 14 million people in south-east Turkey, many culture and arts organizations have found themselves unable to maintain their regular activities. In order to support cultural actors and artists who play a significant role in relief efforts, ‘Spaces of Culture’ tailored its cultural training program with a focus on post-disaster recovery considering the well-being and resilience of cultural actors and artists in such crisis moments.

In partnership with A Corner in the World, three special training programs invite around 60 cultural actors, who already pursue or plan to carry out activities in the earthquake region, from Izmir, Diyarbakır, and Gaziantep, and their neighboring cities. The program is designed to correspond to the needs of the post-earthquake situation through sharing of knowledge on psychosocial recovery, community engagement, cultural preservation, and socio-cultural awareness provided by professionals from the Spaces of Culture’s founder countries, namely Germany, France, Sweden, and the Netherlands, as well as CSOs based in Turkey actively working in the region. Cultural Training Program for Post Disaster Recovery mainly focuses on psychosocial support for children through arts; raising awareness of collective memory and cultural heritage; and regeneration of cultural institutions, spaces, and actors after migration while presenting the best practices from disaster areas.

In the course of the three-day programs in Gaziantep, Diyarbakır, and Izmir, respectively happening between 25-27 May in İzmir, 2-4 June in Diyarbakır, and 16-18 June in Gaziantep, participants get a chance to attend workshops, lectures, and presentations by renowned international trainers, as well as receive mentorship to fine-tune and implement their earthquake-relief projects and activities.
