‘Strong Steps’ creates a platform where young girls and women can express themselves by developing their physical and intellectual abilities through hip-hop and rap workshops. Through workshops held in İzmir, Gaziantep, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, and Hatay, women of different ages come together to tap into their physical creativity with the help of experienced dance instructors.
In addition to dance workshops, the project includes training on rap music lyric writing and performances, and delivers movement and spatial integrity training as the basis of dance therapy to foster a connection between body and mind. In the 2022 edition, the project is realised in collaboration with Urban Spirit, Turkey’s only international street dance festival dedicated to women, and Deja Vu Crew, a female hip-hop dance team from Germany.
With the contributions of the Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey (TEGV), the Association for Supporting Contemporary Life, the Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work, the Kamer Foundation, the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants, the Colorful Hopes Association, and Harran and Ege universities, the project advocates for freedom of expression through movement.
