Spaces of Culture

Yammen Jazbeh, an exceptionally talented musician who graduated from the Higher Institute of Music in Syria, arrived in Turkey only recently. In the few years he has been here, he has made his mark on the musical community using one of the most iconic sounds of the Middle East, the kanun, a stringed instrument that has left an indelible mark on Turkish and Syrian culture over the years. The artist, whose nimble fingers display a mastery of skill and intuition with the instrument each time he plays, has his eyes set on bringing people together through the collaborative spirit of music making. His project, ‘Kanoun without Limits,’ finds Turkish and Syrian musicians in a single recording studio together, trading and blending melodies, rhythms, and styles to produce a uniquely grassroots and cross-cultural album. Having completed recording the album, Jazbeh and his fellow musicians are to perform the finished product live in concert at the Ömer Ersoy Cultural Center on 2 September.
