Ajami Handicraft
The ancient and regal art of wood decoration known as ‘Ajami’ has been around since the time of the Umayyad Dynasty. In more recent times, the Islamic-inspired art form has followed the path Syrian refugees throughout the region and, consequently, has found its way to Turkey. Artist Atta Akil seeks to revive the opulent calligraphic tradition by highlighting the similarities of Syrian and Turkish art forms and, in doing so, strengthen the communities in the region affected by diaspora movements. The handicraft workshop, which takes place 25-26 October at the T.I.M. Art Gallery, is sure to strike a note of commonality for all involved.
