When we talk about cultures and societies of ‘the other,’ thousands of words come to mind. How, then, can we can describe two societies living alongside one another? The ‘Gate of Sun’ team, led by Syrian-born cultural actor Amr Ajlouni, attempts to do just such a thing in Gaziantep through their ‘One Society’ project, an endeavor that brings both Turks and Syrians together to create new memories and bonds through a set of filmmaking capacity-building workshops. These sessions, which utilize simple tools such as mobile phones as artistic devices, will help local youth develop their narration skills as well as expose them to editing and post-production techniques in film. Workshops taking place from November 7-30 will also include practical information on training for filmmaking, production, and media campaigning. The most salient, thematic issues involved are the migrations of art and their effects on particular communities as well as personal stories from artists hailing from either side of the border. In the end, participants will share their films and experiments with audiences from both societies to increase the cultural and civilizational bonds between them. In this way, grassroots dialogues have the chance to find a firm base from which to continue to grow and benefit all involved.
