First ever Bergama Theatre Festival takes place in Bergama this year where the historical texture of the city welcomes the contemporary performing arts. Presenting a wide range of plays, it brings more than a hundred artists from Turkey and abroad to Bergama. The festival which happens between May 10 and 13, involves performances and workshops revolving around four main themes: ‘Bergama-Berlin’, ‘Asclepeion’, ‘The Intervention’ and ‘Let’s Do It Together’. The Bergama-Berlin theme brings emigrant artists together to focus on the issue of immigration based around the complex and historical relationship between these two cities and the ‘Asclepeion’ segment which derives its name from the ancient treatment center with its gloriously intact ancient theatre will house site-specific productions. The Intervention segment on the other hand, aims to take the performances and projects of the national and international artists to the viewers on the farther corners of the city. And Let’s Do It Together segment of the festival brings together performing arts with Bergama’s centuries old local crafts. The Bergama Theatre Festival with its focus on the alternative and contemporary potential of the ancient gift of theatre, keenly awaits the appreciators of the art from all around the world.
